Warning: These Everyday Habits Seriously Up Your Dementia Risk!

The biggest dementia risk factors—age and family history—can't be changed, but scientists have identified others that can be changed or modified to reduce risk of cognitive decline or dementia.

You already know a nutritional, well-balanced diet is essential to your heart and weight. But food's benefits for the brain are sometimes overlooked. "The brain needs healthy fats, lean proteins, vitamins and minerals to function properly," says Howard Fillit, MD, founding executive director and chief scientist of the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF) and the ADDF's Cognitive Vitality Program. Also, research shows that people who have a diet high in saturated fats are more likely to develop dementia. The best nutrition you can give your brain is a diet full of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. Replace butter with healthy fats, such as olive oil, and limit your intake of red meat, instead opting for other lean protein sources including chicken and fish. Here's a guide to the best brain food.

Ignoring chronic illness

Untreated hypertension and diabetes are two of the greatest risk factors for dementia such as Alzheimer's disease, explains Dr. Fillit. "Diabetics have up to 73 percent increased risk of dementia and a an even higher risk of developing vascular dementia than non-diabetics," he says. "Having hypertension in middle age also increases the risk of both Alzheimer's and vascular dementia." For both diseases, managing them with medication, diet and exercise can lower dementia risk significantly. To manage—or ideally, avoid—chronic illness, be sure to keep up with your doctor's appointments. "Patients who visit doctors are less likely to get dementia, as high blood pressure, diabetes and hypertension all can be modified when they're under a physician's surveillance," says Clifford Segil, DO, neurologist at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

Hitting the bottle too hard can increase your risk for many health issues, including high blood pressure, stroke, liver disease, in addition to dementia. "Drinking too much can make people's brains atrophy or get pickled, causing early onset memory loss," says Dr. Segil. "Multiple studies have shown a correlation between prolonged alcohol use and cognitive complaints." In addition, years of drinking alcohol can cause rare forms or memory loss that lead to confusion, known as Wenicke-Korsakoff syndrome. It is safe for your health to drink in moderation—one drink a day for women and two for men. In fact, doing so (especially red wine) may be good for your brain health, as the flavonoids in red wine are linked to a lowered risk of dementia in older people.

Smoking

igarettes and cigarette smoke contain more than 4,700 chemical compounds, including some that are highly toxic, says Dr. Fillit. In addition, studies have shown that people who smoke are at higher risk of developing all types of dementia, and a much higher risk (up to 79 percent) for Alzheimer's disease, specifically. The good news is that former smokers have a much lower dementia risk than current smokers, so the sooner you quit the better. Here are 15 more benefits to kicking the habit.

More than a million cases of Alzheimer's disease in the United States can been attributed to a lack of exercise, and yet nearly one-third of Americans remain physically inactive. "Strong research shows that exercise benefits the brain and can reduce your risk of falls, age-related diseases and even death," says Dr. Fillit. When exercise is pumping oxygen and blood to your heart and muscles, your brain is benefitting too. The World Health Organization recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity (or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity) aerobic exercise every week, which equates to working out 30 minutes a day around five times a week.

Lack of mental stimulation


Just as it's important to exercise your body, it's equally important to exercise your mind. Spending too much time glued to your couch, passively cycling through your Netflix queue instead of actively engaging your brain may increase your risk for dementia. "Research suggests that keeping the brain active seems to increase its vitality and may build its reserves of brain cells and connections," Heather Snyder, senior director of medical and scientific operations for the Alzheimer's Association, says. Tapping these benefits is easy, too: "Complete a jigsaw or crossword puzzle, play games which require strategic thinking like chess or bridge or take a class online or at your local community college," Synder suggests. Last year, researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital published a study finding an association between feeling of loneliness and social isolation and build up of beta-amyloid—a protein in the brain linked to Alzheimer's. "This corresponds to earlier research that lonely people had double the risk of Alzheimer's than their more social peers," says Dr. Fillit. Even if you're more of an introvert and enjoy your alone time, try to put more effort into pursuing social activities, for example joining a book club, volunteering at an animal shelter or participating in community sports.

Not getting enough sleep

Dr. Fillit points to research linking sleep problems—such as insomnia and sleep apnea—with an increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. "In addition, a recent study estimates that 15 percent of Alzheimer's disease cases may be attributable to sleep problems." Other recent research published in the journal Alzheimer's & Dementia involving nearly 7,500 women found that averaging less than six hours a night of sleep raised risk of dementia by 36 percent. To lower your risk, Dr. Fillit suggests establishing a bedtime routine, maintaining a regular sleep schedule and treating sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea. It's also a good idea not to exercise or eat within two to three hours before bedtime, as both can impair sleep.

It's natural for sleep patterns to change as you age. For example, parents caring for a newborn baby might average three to four hours, while a 60-something who recently retired might be able to manage nine a night. In the same study of 7,500 women, the researchers found that sleeping more than eight hours a night increased risk of dementia by 35 percent. Using certain types of sleep aids to get enough sleep may also be a problem: "I often see patients with insomnia or other sleeping problems resolving their issues with medications," says Dr. Segil. "One type of sleeping pill often used is Benadryl, which is an antihistamine. These medications decrease the same chemicals in the brain that one family of Alzheimer's medications is designed to increase." Talk with your doctor and make sure if you're going to take sleeping pills other behavioral things have been tried like improving your sleep hygiene. There are more hazards to getting too much sleep.

We talked to two nutritionists, Keri Gans, R.D.N., and Marie Spano, R.D., to help break down the best and worst food options for you to grab in the airport. You may be surprised how easy it is today to eat healthy while traveling, whether you have a layover long enough for a sit-down dinner or just 34 seconds to snatch something off the shelf at a kiosk.

The list that follows is just a sample of the healthy eating options available in airports. If you can't find these exact options, aim to stay within these guidelines, says both Gans and Spano.

  • Meals around 600 calories
  • Snacks around 250 calories
  • Stay away from candy bars, fried foods, pastries, and alcohol
  • Don't be afraid to ask for food modifications (dressing on the side, no cheese, grilled instead of fried)
  • Stay hydrated

And no, onion rings are not a vegetable.

Want another reason to add a couple slices of avocado onto your sandwich? People who regularly eat avocados tend to have better overall diets, taking in more fiber, healthy fats, and certain vitamins than those who don’t eat the fruit, according to a new study in Internal Medicine Review. They also weighed less, had lower waist circumferences, and lower insulin levels. Now, the study was supported by the Hass Avocado Board—who obviously support the consumption of avocados—but the study also needed to pass an objective peer review to be published.

Simply thinking you’re taking statins may make you believe you’re experiencing side effects associated with them, new research from Imperial College London suggests. When patients weren’t sure whether they were taking statins or a placebo pill, they reported a similar number of side effects. But when they knew they were taking statins, they were up to 41 percent more likely to report muscle pain, one of the most common side effects of the drug that causes many to discontinue its use. This illustrates the “nocebo” effect, where you develop a side effect known to be associated with a drug that’s not actually related to the drug itself.

NEW WARNINGS ON ACID REFLUX MEDS?

The Esophageal Cancer Action Network (ECAN) just filed a citizen’s petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) asking the agency to add new warnings on over-the-counter acid reflux meds about the risk of esophageal cancer associated with persistent acid reflux disease, according to The Baltimore Sun. The meds may relieve the symptoms, but that doesn’t mean the cancer risk no longer exists, the petition says. The FDA is currently reviewing the petition and will respond directly to ECAN.

It’s not just your imagination: You may feel extra crappy during a thunderstorm if you suffer from asthma or other respiratory ailments, researchers from the University of Georgia suggest. That’s because the combination of rainfall, winds, and lightning together with the available pollen and mold spores can exacerbate asthma flares, they say. What’s more, the electrical activity during a thunderstorm can further break up the pollen, making it easier to disperse—and you more likely to start wheezing.

Carrying too much extra weight is a risk factor for arthritis, since it can place extra pressure on your joints, causing the cartilage to wear away. But losing the pounds could help: Overweight or obese people who lost 5 percent of their bodyweight showed lower rates of cartilage degeneration than those whose weight remained stable—and the effects were even more significant in people who lost 10 percent of their bodyweight, the researchers from the University of California at San Francisco found.

Don't Worry If You're a Worrier … It Could Be Good for You

Although worrying does not feel good, it may have surprising benefits, when done in just the right amount, two psychology researchers argue in a new editorial.

For example, worrying may motivate people to engage in behaviors that are potentially beneficial to their health, the researchers said. People who are worried may slather on sunscreen to help prevent skin cancer, and women may get regular mammograms to screen for breast cancer, the researchers said.

"Despite its negative reputation, not all worry is destructive or even futile," lead author Kate Sweeny, a psychology professor at the University of California, Riverside, said in a statement.

However, the relationship between worry and behaviors that are potentially beneficial to people's health is complex and seems to depend on how much a person worries, the authors noted. 

Previous research has shown that "women who reported moderate amounts of worry, compared to women reporting relatively low or high levels of worry, are more likely to get screened for cancer," Sweeny said. "It seems that both too much and too little worry can interfere with motivation, but the right amount of worry can motivate without paralyzing."

In the editorial, the authors looked at research that had examined both the downsides and upsides of worry. For example, studies have linked excessive worrying with such downsides as anxiety, fatigue, trouble concentrating and sleep problems, the researchers wrote in the editorial, published April 18 in the journal Social and Personality Psychology Compass.

However, other research has shown that worrying can also have positive effects on behavior, the researchers said. Worrying may not only motivate people to take action, as in using sunscreen, but also may allow people to better prepare themselves for negative experiences in their lives, and develop a greater appreciation for positive experiences in their lives.

For example, if a person is worrying and bracing for the worst in a certain situation, and then if that person receives the bad news they have been bracing for, the person's disappointment will be mitigated by their worrying. However, if that same person receives good news instead of the bad news they were expecting, then the person may experience more excitement than if he or she had not been worried in the first place, the researchers said. 

The new paper "flies in the face of what a lot of people may assume when it comes to worry," said Simon Rego, an associate professor of clinical psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. However, the idea that worry may have an upside is definitely valid, said Rego, who was not involved in writing the editorial.

Moreover, there are other psychological states, and emotions, that may feel unpleasant to the person who is experiencing them, but that can nonetheless be useful to this person. For example, experiencing justifiable anger may motivate people to "defend themselves or correct a sense of injustice," Rego told Live Science. If a person sees someone else key-scratching his or her car, then experiencing anger would motivate the car owner to do something to rectify the injustice that is happening, he said.

Why Snacks Just Make You Hungrier

This probably sounds familiar: You stop by your office break room and notice some chips or cookies lying out—leftovers from a catered lunch. You’re not hungry, but you decide to have a bite or two. By the time you’re back at your desk, your stomach is screaming for more.

What’s the deal with that?

Even before you swallow a bite of food, taste receptors in your mouth start “talking” with your brain and stomach—letting them know food is on the way, says Belinda Lennerz, M.D., an endocrinologist and nutrition researcher at Boston Children’s Hospital.

That leads to hormone shifts and other metabolic changes that help your digestive system prepare to handle a big influx of food, Dr. Lennerz says. (One example: Your insulin levels tick up in order to keep your blood sugar from climbing too high post-feed.)

All this is good and necessary if you’re taking down a whole meal. These preparations keep your body in a happy state of homeostasis, Dr. Lennerz says.

But in that break-room scenario—and in many other snacking situations—your body doesn’t know you only intended to have a bite or two, she says.

Your gut and digestive system react as though a big meal is on the way. The resulting drop in blood sugar can shoot your hunger through the roof, Dr. Lennerz says. That can send you running back to the break room to pound those cookies and chips by the fistful.

What can you do about all this? Follow these three snacking rules:

“When it comes to eating, it’s difficult to stop once you’ve started,” says Robin Tucker, Ph.D., R.D., an assistant professor of human nutrition at Michigan State University.

She reiterates much of what Dr. Lennerz describes above, and says the main message here is an obvious one: If you’re not hungry, don’t eat anything.

Keep in mind, it may be especially tough to stop eating salty or sweet treats after just a bite or two, says Kent Berridge, Ph.D., a professor of neuroscience at the University of Michigan.

“A lot of modern packaged foods are made to tap into the brain’s reward pathways,” he explains.

Particularly if a snack combines sweet and salty flavors—a combo that fires up you’re your brain’s “GIVE ME MORE” sectors—you may find it tough to stop after a bite or two, he says.

When it comes to food, your brain has a lifetime’s worth of experience to draw from. And because you know how a food will taste, just seeing or smelling some snacks can “turn on the wanting,” Berridge says.

“Even thinking about food can trigger the kinds of hormonal responses that increase hunger,” Tucker adds.

Their advice? Clear your environment of temptations.

At work, you want to keep your office and desk free of snacks or food imagery, Tucker says. If you know the break room may be loaded with goodies, keep away.

The same rules apply at home, she says. Keep snack foods tucked away in cabinets—not out on the counter where a stroll through the kitchen will expose you to them.

REACH FOR THE RIGHT SNACKS

Tucker says there are two kinds of eating: hedonic and homeostatic.

“Homeostatic refers to energy deficits, so you’re eating because your body needs energy,” she explains. “Hedonic eating is eating for pleasure.”

While these two kinds of eating are not mutually exclusive—you can eat both for pleasure and to satisfy your body’s energy needs—most of the situations mentioned above have to do with hedonic eating. That is, you crave food because your senses were exposed to tasty goodies—not because your body needs energy.

On the other hand, there are lots of times when your body really IS running low on energy—like after a big workout, or late in the afternoon when you’ve been grinding at the office and haven’t eaten for hours. In those cases, the right snack can help quell hunger until your next meal, Tucker says.

What should you reach for?

“Proteins and healthy fats,” Dr. Lennerz says.

Your body digests both slowly, and neither triggers the kind of hunger-stoking insulin response you get from sugar or refined carbs, she says.

What does that translate to in real-food terms? Snacks like avocado, nuts and full-fat yogurt.

Tucker says fiber-rich carbohydrates—mainly, whole fruits—can also be a good snack. Apple and peanut butter combines a whole fruit with some fat and protein. Hummus and vegetable sticks is another satisfying option, she says.

Man Survives 'Hangman's Fracture' After Crash

A young man in Tunisia who was in a high-speed crash suffered a broken neck — in an injury doctors call a "hangman's fracture" — yet recovered with no lingering problems, according to a recent report of the man's case.

A "hangman's fracture" refers to a neck injury that occurs when a person's neck snaps backwards, as it would during a hanging.

And though the name refers to an act that's far less common today than it once was, the injury itself is not incredibly rare: Dr. Anis Khelifi, who was an orthopedic surgeon at the Kassab Orthopedic Institute in Tunisia when he treated the patient, said he's seen this type of fracture twice. 

The fracture occurs in the second cervical vertebra (in other words, the second-from-the-top vertebra of the spine), and is the second most common type of fracture for this vertebra, Khelifi told Live Science.

After the car crash, which took place in August 2012, the 25-year-old man came to the emergency room in severe pain, according to the brief report of the man's case, which was published today (May 3) in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The doctors examined the man and concluded that the crash had not damaged his spinal cord, according to the report. Spinal cord damage can lead to paralysis, and if the damage is extreme, it can cause death, Khelifi said. 

To check for spinal cord damage, the doctors did a neurological exam, including checking to see if the man had any weakness in his arms or legs and if he could sense a light touch or pinprick on his skin, according to the report.

Although the man hadn't damaged his spinal cord, the doctors concluded that his injury was "unstable," Khelifi said. In other words, there was a chance the injury would get worse and cause more damage.

The man underwent surgery to stabilize the injury, and he fully recovered. Four years after the injury and surgery, he was pain-free and had no neurological problems, according to the report.

New research published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia suggests that fructose in sugary beverages might damage the brain. A team from Boston University, using data from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS), found that people who regularly drink sugary drinks are more likely to have poorer memory, smaller overall brain volume, and a significantly smaller hippocampus—the part of the brain important for learning and memory. A second study, published in the journal Stroke, found that people who drank diet soda daily were almost three times as likely to develop stroke and dementia when compared to those who didn’t.

The first study involved examination of data, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and cognitive testing results, from around 4,000 people enrolled in the Framingham Heart Study’s Offspring and Third-Generation cohorts. A “high intake” group was established: people who consumed more than two sugary drinks a day of any type, including fruit juice and other soft drinks, or more than three per week of soda alone. In that group, researchers identified multiple signs of accelerated brain aging, including smaller overall brain volume, poorer episodic memory, and a shrunken hippocampus, all risk factors for early-stage Alzheimer’s disease. They also found that higher intake of diet drinks—at least one per day—was associated with smaller brain volume.

The second study used data only from the older Offspring cohort and focused on whether participants had suffered a stroke or been diagnosed with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease. Researcher measured volunteers’ beverage intake at three points over seven years, then monitored the volunteers for 10 years, looking for evidence of stroke in 2,888 people over age 45, and dementia in 1,484 participants over age 60. While they found no correlation between sugary beverage intake and stroke or dementia, they found that people who drank at least one diet soda per day were almost three times as likely to develop stroke and dementia.

It’s important to note that the findings of both studies demonstrate correlation but not cause-and-effect. The advice from researchers is to avoid over-consuming either diet soda or sugary drinks, but more research is needed to determine how—or if—these drinks actually damage the brain, and how much damage may be caused by underlying vascular disease or diabetes. “These studies are not the be-all and end-all, but it’s strong data and a very strong suggestion,” says Boston University School of Medicine professor of neurology Sudha Seshadri, MD, as reported by Science Daily. “It looks like there is not very much of an upside to having sugary drinks, and substituting the sugar with artificial sweeteners doesn’t seem to help.”

Scientists Find a Host of Toxic Chemicals in Name Brand Lipstick & Other Cosmetic Products

A study released by the University of California, Berkeley (UBC) School of Public health has found many conventional lipstick products to contain dangerously high levels of aluminum, cadmium, lead, and other toxins. Researchers tested over 30 popular lipstick products and found this to be the case. The study was published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. Even women using minimal amounts of product still increase their risk of developing harmful health conditions like nerve damage and cancer by an alarming amount.

According to the study:

Most of the tested lip products contained high concentrations of titanium and aluminum. All examined products had detectable manganese. Lead was detected in 24 products (75%), with an average concentration of 0.36 ± 0.39 ppm, including one sample with 1.32 ppm. When used at the estimated average daily rate, estimated intakes were > 20% of ADIs derived for aluminum, cadmium, chromium, and manganese. In addition, average daily use of 10 products tested would result in chromium intake exceeding our estimated ADI for chromium. For high rates of product use (above the 95th percentile), the percentages of samples with estimated metal intakes exceeding ADIs were 3% for aluminum, 68% for chromium, and 22% for manganese. Estimated intakes of lead were < 20% of ADIs for average and high use.

A daily intake of these cosmetics would result in a large exposure to chromium, a carcinogen that has been linked to stomach tumours.  Average use of these products could result in overexposure to aluminum, cadmium, and manganese. Exposure to high concentrations of manganese has been linked to high toxicity levels in the nervous system. Lead was also detected, and no level of lead exposure is safe for anybody.

“Just finding these metals isn’t the issue; it’s the levels that matter. Some of the toxic metals are occurring at levels that could possibly have an effect in the long term.”

The amount of metals found definitely needs to be brought to the attention of health regulators. But we have a problem here, as health regulators are usually connected to the corporations that develop these products in the first place. The real solution is to just stop using them. We are sold on the idea that we need these beauty products and yet they are filled with harmful chemicals. Are we not beautiful anyway? Right now there are no standards in the United States for metal content in cosmetics, which is deeply disturbing. They can pretty much put whatever they please into them, and it doesn’t take long for the bloodstream to absorb whatever we put onto bodies.

The truth is, many of the ingredients in personal care and beauty products aren’t so pretty. U.S. researchers have found that one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in cosmetic and personal care products are hazardous industrial chemicals. This means that 10,500 industrial chemicals are used as cosmetic ingredients, many of which are carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, plasticizers (chemicals that keep concrete soft), degreasers (used to get grime off auto parts), and surfactants (they reduce surface tension in water, like in paint and inks). And these go on our skin and into the environment.

What Happens To Your Body When You Switch or Stop Using Cosmetic Products

A new study led by researchers at UC Berkeley and Clinica de Salud del Valle Salinas has demonstrated how taking even a short break from various cosmetics, shampoos, and other personal care products can lead to a substantial drop in the levels of hormone-disrupting chemicals present within the body.


The results from the study were published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives. Researchers gave 100 Latina teenagers various personal care products that were labelled to be free of common chemicals including phthalates, parabens, triclosan, and oxybenzone. These chemicals are used regularly in almost all conventional personal care products such as cosmetics, soap, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioner, and other hair products, and animal studies have shown that they directly interfere with the body’s endocrine system.

“Because women are the primary consumers of many personal care products, they may be disproportionately exposed to these chemicals,” said study lead author Kim Harley, Associate Director of the UC Berkeley Center for Environmental Research and Children’s Health. “Teen girls may be at particular risk since it’s a time of rapid reproductive development, and research has suggested that they use more personal care products per day than the average adult woman.”

Results

After just a three-day trial with the girls using only the lower-chemical products, urine samples showed a significant drop in the level of chemicals in the body. Methyl and propyl parabens, commonly used as preservatives in cosmetics, dropped 44% and 45%, respectively, while metabolites of diethyl phthalate, used often in perfumes, dropped by 27%, and both triclosan and benzophenone-3 fell 36%. The authors of the study were surprised to see an increase in two lesser common parabens, but those levels were small and could easily be caused by accidental contamination or a substitute not listed on the labels.

Co-director of the study Kimberly Parra explains why having local youths participate in the study was of particular importance:

The results of the study are particularly interesting on a scientific level, but the fact that high school students led the study set a new path to engaging youth to learn about science and how it can be used to improve the health of their communities. After learning of the results, the youth took it upon themselves to educate friends and community members, and presented their cause to legislatures in Sacramento.

Included in the CHAMACOS Youth Council were 12 local high school students who helped design and implement the study; one of the teen researchers, Maritza Cárdenas, is now a UC Berkely Undergraduate majoring in molecular and cell biology.

“One of the goals of our study was to create awareness among the participants of the chemicals found in everyday products, to help make people more conscious about what they’re using,” said Cárdenas. “Seeing the drop in chemical levels after just three days shows that simple actions can be taken, such as choosing products with fewer chemicals, and make a difference.”

What Can You Do?

Well, you can be sure to check the labels on any products you purchase. Most personal care products contain a list of ingredients, but unfortunately many cosmetics do not. If you use a particular brand that you really love you can try contacting the manufacturer directly and asking them for an ingredient list.

You can also opt for more natural and organic products, but be sure to keep in mind that in the industry of personal care products, the words “natural” and “organic” are often meaningless. A safe bet would be to buy these products from a health food store and be sure to read the ingredients or ask the sales clerk. Generally, when products do not contain specific chemicals, the manufacturers are happy to label them as such.
