Mystery Surrounds Treasure Trove of Gold Coins Hidden in Piano in Shropshire

The coins are 91.7% gold and would have been worth more than the price of a house at the time they were hidden in the instrument.
The hoard of gold coins was found hidden in an upright piano at a school in Shropshire
Investigators have been left scratching their heads as to why a treasure trove of gold coins was hidden in an old piano.

The collection of 913 coins, declared as treasure by a coroner on Thursday, was found hidden beneath the instrument's keyboard at a school in Shropshire as it was being retuned.

It is reported the hoard could be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, though it still has to be formally valued.

Experts from the British Museum say the coins range in date from 1847 to 1915 and include 633 full sovereigns and 280 half-sovereigns.

They were found neatly stacked in several hand-stitched bags and would have been worth around £773 at the time they were hidden, well above the average house price of £619.

A treasure inquest is being held in Shropshire to determine what should happen to the hoard.
The collection is yet to be formally valued
The majority of the coins date from the reign of Queen Victoria and were found to be 91.7% pure gold.

At an inquest into the discovery, coroner John Ellery ruled that the gold coins were treasure but said: "We simply do not know how they came to be concealed."

An international media appeal as well as local research failed to shed any light on who put the 6kg hoard into the piano.

The instrument previously belonged to Graham and Meg Hemmings, from Saffron Walden in Essex, but they donated it to Bishop's Castle Community College in Shropshire after moving nearby in 2015.
A Gold Sovereign from the reign of Queen Victoria, dated 1847, was the oldest coin in the hoard.

The couple had owned it for 33 years without any knowledge of its secret.

The hoard was discovered by tuning technician Martin Backhouse, 61, who initially thought the "gobsmacking" discovery was "moth repellent" before realising it was too heavy.

After slitting the stitching with his penknife, he realised there was "rather a lot of gold in this".

Both Mr Backhouse and the school could be in line for a windfall from the hoard's sale.

Mr and Mrs Hemmings said they did not regret donating the piano to the school.

Mrs Hemmings said: "The sadness is, it's not a complete story. They've looked and searched for the people and they unfortunately haven't come forward.

"It's an incomplete story - but it's still an exciting story."

During the hearing, Peter Reavill, from the British Museum, said one of the packets contained an old Shredded Wheat advertising card, meaning the hoard was probably "repackaged" sometime during the Great Depression era.

Women Keep Giving Birth After Eating This Legendary Pizza

If you're pregnant and feel like it's about time you gave birth, pop over to Hawthorne's and have 'The Inducer'.

The somewhat scarily nicknamed pizza has a growing reputation for sending expectant women into labour.

It's long been acknowledged that spicy food is associated with helping overdue mums give birth. Many have traditionally opted for a curry.

But The Inducer, a Buffalo Wing Pizza sold at Hawthorne's New York Pizza and Bar in Charlotte, North Carolina, is quickly gaining status for being hugely effective.

The pizza is on the restaurant's special menu. It features "medium-hot Buffalo sauce with chicken and mozzarella cheese". So don't tell an Italian if you're going to have one. Chicken being one of Italy's Culinary Sins, of course.

Pregnancy pizza

According to locals, the dish has sent multiple women into labour. Charlotte Five spoke to three women who claim they all gave birth after tucking in. Or even during.

The most recent is Henley Schmiedel. She was "just done with her pregnancy," so her girlfriends urged her to try The Inducer. She did, and, within hours, she was rushing to hospital. Henley's story has somewhat cemented the pizza in pregnancy folklore.

The pizza saw its first glimmer of a wider trend with Ali Aldrich, who gave birth after dining at Hawthorne's in 2010. Then came Kristin Kogan, who said that her waters broke after just a slice.

Word is spreading
via Instagram
Restaurant owner Michael Adams said: “I think it’s amazing. When the first person posted that our Buffalo Wing Pizza induced their labour, several new mums followed up to say the same thing.

"I bet my wife wished she had known about the inducing pizza when she had our two kids at 9lbs plus.”

The NHS says that there are no scientifically proven ways of triggering labour. But there's no harm in ordering a spicy pizza.

Blanket of Spiderwebs Covers Entire Field

Visitors to a New Zealand park recently found the grass blanketed not by flowers, but by silk webs produced by what appeared to be thousands of tiny spiders.

Park-goer Tracey Maris noticed something unusual about the scene on April 16 and captured video footage of the gently rolling silk waves. The web blanket was approximately 98 feet (30 meters) long and as wide as 7 to 10 feet (2 to 3 m), The New Zealand Herald reported. Webs covered ground near a soccer field at the Gordon Spratt Reserve in suburban Papamoa, near the Bay of Plenty on New Zealand's eastern coast, the newspaper said.

Initially, Maris thought the silk nets were unoccupied, she said. But as she and her family explored the webs' outer perimeter, they noticed that there were "little black things on top" — spiders, numbering in the thousands, Maris told The NZ Herald. "So, as you do, we screamed really loudly," she said.

Maris spotted the webs on a newly made tsunami evacuation mound, she told the news agency Storyful. "There was a bright glistening coming from the top of the mound. It looked almost like the hill was sparkling," Maris said. The elevated mound may have attracted spiders seeking higher ground after recent flooding from Cyclone Cook earlier that week, Maris told Storyful.

It is very likely that the field's silky cover is made of sheet webs, spun by members of the sheet web spider family, Thomas Scheibel, head of the Department for Biomaterials at the University of Bayreuth in Germany, told Live Science in an email.

Scheibel, who studies biomaterials like spider webs, explained that sheet webs are made up of not just one type of spider silk, "but typically several silks with different properties."

New Zealand hosts a variety of sheet web spider species, the largest of which is Cambridgea foliata. While the smallest sheet web spiders measure just a few centimeters across, C. foliata's leg span is "palm-sized," and it produces a web that can measure over 3 feet (1 m) across, according to a species description shared by the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

"But it is impossible to tell which spider made the webs in the video," Scheibel told Live Science. "However, it is likely that all webs in the video are made by the same species — although probably several thousands of individuals."

But even the efforts of several thousand spiders can last for only so long. Their work was partly destroyed by a dog that ran across the field shortly after Maris shot her video, and a thunderstorm wiped away what was left; when she returned to the park the next day, no sign of the web remained, Maris told Storyful.

"For me, it was being at the right place at the right time yesterday to see a phenomenon which is rarely seen," she said.

Heroes Rescue Driver Survives Truck Dangling Off Highway Bridge

A heart-pounding rescue was captured on video last week when a truck was teetering over the edge of a highway near the Surrey/Delta border in Vancouver.
Credit: CTV News
According to the Vancouver Sun, Delta police say the incident occurred in the westbound lanes of Highway 17 on Thursday afternoon, although how and why the truck went through the barrier and over the edge is still under investigation.

Sharlene Brooks of the Delta police said fire crews managed to get the driver out of the truck. “They just needed to make sure the vehicle was somewhat secure in order to get him out of the driver’s seat. He was the only occupant of the vehicle, which is again, very fortunate,” said Brooks. “We tried to call him but his phone was on the floor of the passenger side and he wasn’t moving.”

Apparently, a toolbox fastened to the undercarriage of the truck is credited for stabilizing the truck on the barrier and preventing it from tumbling over the ledge. The unnamed driver works for Canadian Slab Distributors, whose human resources manager says the driver spent 30 intense minutes stuck in the truck.
“He was sitting really still. He was so scared he was going to go over. It’s a good thing for that toolbox,” Jennifer Zandvliet told the Vancouver Sun. Zandvliet only learned of the accident after seeing pictures of the truck on news websites. “I zoomed in on the logo and it was our truck,” she said. “We tried to call him but his phone was on the floor of the passenger side and he wasn’t moving. I am just so happy he is safe.”

The driver was extracted from the vehicle, although he was taken to the hospital suffering serious injuries. According to reports, he is now at home resting.

Another Jaw-Dropping ‘Floating City’ Has Appeared over China

Another bizarre ‘floating city’ has apparently been filmed in the sky above baffled onlookers in China, in a video that has gone viral since. Optical illusion? Hoax? Or something entirely different we can’t explain?
Yet another video has appeared on social netwokrs showing what appears to be a floating city hovering in an overcast sky, as baffled onlookers were left shoked by massive strcutures that appared above the sky.

The video—which has gone viral—has been interpreted by many users as another example of floating cities. The video was filmed above Jieyang, in the Guangdong province in China.

Sadly, no other footage of the event has appeared, leaving many to question the veracity of the filming. Is this just another hoax?

Here’s the video:

Interestingly, this is the third time people have managed to record what appears to be a floating city above China. In early 2017, people in Yeuyang were left shocked after a similar phenomenon appeared in the sky.

In 2016, another set of images and video recordings surfaced on the internet showing another mysterious ‘floating city’ filmed above the clouds in Dalian in northeast China’s Liaoning Province.

In 2015, another ‘floating city’ was recorded over the city of Jiangxi, as an eerie cluster of buildings appeared just above the sky.

The Jiangxi ‘incident’ however, was explained by experts who concluded that the phenomena to be a natural mirage, an optical illusion called Fata Morgana.

Also in 2015, a floating city created confusion among residents of Foshan, as people watched in amazement a giant city appearing out of nowhere. According to media reports, thousands of people stood still, watching the ‘ghostly city’ in what has been the second apparition of a ‘flying city’ in China. The mysterious ‘city’ was reported to have giant skyscrapers and other smaller buildings which are ‘clearly’ visible in the image according to social network users.

A video from the 2015 sighting:

But not only have videos of floating cities been recorded over China, interestingly, similar events were also recorded around the world.

In 2011, hundreds of people from the small border town of Dulali in Darazo, Nigeria, claimed to have seen a huge ‘flying city in the sky’. “The giant floating city” appeared out of nowhere, the entire city was surrounded by a thin cloud, it flew very close to the ground, through these “clouds” witnesses claimed to have seen beautiful large buildings, towers and the sound of machines originating from the city. According to local reports, 10-year-old Ibrahim could not believe what he was seeing.
When reporters from the Nigerian national newspaper asked local residents about their opinion what they had seen, they said that it was the work of God, because of their religious beliefs. The Imam of the village, Mallam Shehu Liman, confirmed the sighting, though he attributed it to “Allah” and the “Djinn”, a reference to the spirits in the Islamic and Arab folklore. “We believe that perhaps God used those sightings for us to open our eyes and see how the Djinn live in their own world,” said Liman.

Reports of mysterious structures appearing in the sky have been reported since ancient times. Many of us are familiar with stories about strange creatures that appear out of nowhere, mysterious creatures coming out of giant crafts, flames, spheres, etc… These mythological “ships” were known in ancient India as the Vimana, mythological flying palaces or chariots described in Hindu texts and Sanskrit epics.

While most of these videos are ‘incredible’—what’s cooler than seeing a floating city?—it appears the explanation is actually much simpler than a ‘Massive alien city appearing from another dimension’.

What people saw most likely is a rare type of mirage called Fata Morgana—an optical illusion caused by specific weather conditions bending light rays.

As explained by Wired, a Fata Morgana occurs when the Sun heats up a layer of the atmosphere but the layer of air below it remains cool. When different layers of the atmosphere are different temperatures, a temperature gradient is generated. These different temperatures also mean differing densities between the layers.

'Alien-Like' Hercules Beetle Wriggles While Inside Pupa Before It Prepares to Emerge as Fully Grown Insect

"Like something right out of Aliens" - the footage is remarkable and shows someone holding the huge creature while it wriggles"

A Hercules beetle was captured on camera moving and squirming inside its pupa as it prepares to emerge as a fully grown insect.

Described as "like something right out of Aliens" the creature can be seen moving around in the bizarre footage, as it prepares to break free.

Hercules beetles are a form of rhinoceros beetle that can reach more than 17cm long. They transform larvae to a pupa stage - as seen in the video - before they moult and the beetle emerges as an adult.

The footage was shared online by Ziya Tong, the host of a TV nature programme in Canada called Daily Planet.

Ziya added the caption: "Woah. This is the pupa of a Hercules beetle.

"Like something right out of Aliens.

"And...it moves!"

Ziya, also shared a blog post from a writer who said the Hercules beetle was one of her favourite creatures.

The Epic Creature of the Month blog says: "The lifecycle of the Hercules beetle is not unusual for an insect but is longer than most.

"Once hatched from its egg, the larva spends up to two years tunneling/eating rotting wood; the larva looks like a large white caterpillar.

"Once they have stored enough energy they will turn into a hard shell and morph into the beetle, when the beetle is ready to come out they will moult (shed) their shell and emerge an adult.

"As adults they will roam the forest floor for decaying fruit, mate and fight; that's not a bad life if you ask me.

"With its size, horns, strength, special body slam and longevity no wonder it is so famous.

"These same reasons are why I am deeming this creature epic!"
